Overcast
Surrealism

BACKSTORY
"Overcast" explores what happens when pressure stops being something you fight and becomes something you simply pass through. This piece came out of a period of stress and overload, though what I drew was not the moment of breaking. I removed the top of the figure's head entirely and let the output occupy the space where the mind would be, then sent the same release back down through his chest. It reflects on the tension between relief and repetition, between the act of letting something out and the discovery that it never actually leaves. The artwork captures a body that has stopped resisting and become a passage.
CONCEPTS
The composition is built on a single vertical column running the full height of the canvas, with the release rising out of the open skull and returning through the body below. His mouth opens past what a jaw allows, and the void inside it is absolute, offering the viewer an opening rather than an expression. I gave him no eyes at all, ending the face above the nose so that nothing remains to read him by. The use of a warm and dusty color palette, dominated by cream, purple, terracotta, and deep red, reinforces the theme of heat held rather than released. Every surface in the piece is built from line alone, with the cloud constructed entirely from contour and curl and no shading whatsoever, so that skin, fabric, smoke, and background all share the same mark and the same breath. His shoulders stay relaxed and his posture stays loose, and that stillness is the point. The overall composition presents surrender, not struggle.
TAKEAWAY
"Overcast" invites viewers to reflect on the pressures they have stopped fighting. It encourages a closer look at the difference between release and circulation, at how often what we let go of returns to us through another opening. This piece serves as a visual meditation on endurance, on the quiet that arrives once resistance has been abandoned, and on the strange calm of carrying something indefinitely. It challenges viewers to consider what they are currently passing through their body without noticing, and whether they still believe it is on its way out.
