BACKSTORY

"Half Life" introduces Rem, a character who explores what it costs to carry something you never asked to be given. This piece was inspired by a posture drawn directly from my own practice, the moment I stop drawing and look up with the brush still resting at my mouth, caught in the space between having an idea and being consumed by one. I gave that moment to a figure altered by an exposure he never chose and cannot undo, and I placed the damage in the crown rather than in the man. It reflects on the tension between elevation and contamination, between an honor that raises you and a weight that reshapes the body carrying it. The artwork captures a maker who continues working long after the work began changing him.

CONCEPTS

The composition frames Rem from below, placing the viewer beneath him and turning the act of looking into an act of looking up. His eyes are sealed behind opaque golden lenses, closing off the one feature that would offer reassurance, while his open mouth leaves him entirely exposed. The use of a toxic and regal color palette, dominated by violet, gold, and coral, reinforces the theme of royalty and corruption occupying the same body. The crown resting low across his brow carries more damage than the man beneath it, cratered and pitted and hosting small creatures that live on decay, establishing that the honor itself was consumed while he carried it. The dense linework across his skin and the drips falling from his jaw record the passage of something through him, while the paintbrush held at his lip insists that the work continues regardless of what the work has cost.

TAKEAWAY

"Half Life" invites viewers to reflect on the price attached to the things that elevate them. It encourages an honest look at the crowns we accept without examining, and at the way a calling reshapes the person who answers it. This piece serves as a visual meditation on transformation and endurance, on remaining inside the act of creation even after the process has left its marks. It challenges viewers to consider what they are carrying, what it is doing to them, and whether they would set it down if they could.
